Varna to Whitby – Silver Sand and Boxes of Earth is an exciting and atmospheric experience from the first opening bars of the awesome, thundering Dark Horizons, which I have to confess had my heart pumping with excitement. The more melodic Prelude to the Storm leads the listening deeper into the richly woven tale created by Gil Galad. Inside the Maelstrom is almost a story unto itself with a number of movements which flow effortlessly along. Don’t be fooled by sweet pastoral keyboards midway through because the second half drags you back into the stormy turbulence with a vengeance. As the final words of the narrator fade away I am left wanting more… Overall, Gil Galad take the listener on yet another voyage of musical discovery. The accompanying artwork and story is every bit as essential to the whole package as the music and brings added creative depth to the whole concept. A great addition to any prog rock collection. Well done Gil Galad. May your star continue to shine.
